Feeling Overwhelmed by Hosting Family Responsibilities

A relative announced they’ll be staying for a few days, and before anyone asked me, mummy-in-law had already started discussing meals, shopping and arrangements with me. Family matter hai, I understand, but somehow the work quietly becomes my matter every time. With children and their routine, this is not just one extra dinner. I can help host, but I don’t want my whole time treated as automatically available. I’m thinking of asking my husband to handle transport and one full meal. Why does even asking for a specific share of work feel like I’m being unwelcoming?

I understand why this feels so familiar. In my own case, daycare called during a teaching session because my child had a fever, and I had to leave, arrange transport, and collect them. I missed an assessed presentation; the other parent said they would help later, which is not really help once one person has already handled everything. So asking your husband to own transport and one full meal is entirely reasonable. A guest can be welcomed without you becoming the event manager. The important thing is that he takes responsibility for those tasks, rather than waiting for you to coordinate and remind him.
