Navigating Unpredictable Income While Managing Household Finances

I came back expecting to contribute more, and now I’m asking a family member to cover an appliance repair until my next research payment comes in. It’s not an emergency, but it still feels bad having to plan our household around income that doesn’t arrive reliably, especially when my spouse is affected too. We’ve scheduled repayment across two payments and set a minimum emergency reserve before approving bigger spending. I’m grateful we have that safety net, but I don’t want gratitude to become my whole financial plan. Not sure how much of normal life to pause while income is still unpredictable.

Having a reserve is reassuring, but it does not make the uncertainty feel acceptable. We have also postponed a wanted kitchen renovation after necessary roof repairs took priority. It is the sensible choice, but still disappointing when ordinary plans keep being deferred.
