Struggling with unclear promotion criteria and workplace comparisons

I thought this was the cycle when my work would count visibly. Someone I work alongside got promoted instead, and I’m finding it difficult not to compare, even though I don’t think they did anything wrong. Maybe I assumed consistent work would speak for itself. The annoying part is that I’m not even sure what the timeline or criteria are. A lot of the extra work was useful to the team, apparently just not important enough to change my title. I’m going to ask my manager directly what evidence they need and what timeline they’re actually talking about. But I’m worried the answer will be vague, or that asking now will just confirm there isn’t really a path here. What should I specifically ask for before I decide whether to stay patient or start looking elsewhere?

Ask what exact criteria you need to meet, what evidence counts, and by what date it will be reviewed. If they still give only vague answers, that is also an answer about whether there is a real path there.
